Saving Your Neck

The face isn’t the only place that ages. A little effort now can keep the most neglected body part tight, smooth, and even swan like.

Consider, if you will, the neck. While the face gets moisturized, buffed, and babied, most necks are lucky to get a spritz of perfume now and then-and the difference shows. “The neck is a dead giveaway,” writes Nora. “You have to cut open a redwood tree to see how old it is, but you wouldn’t have to if it had a neck.” Nora is right. The neck really does show signs of aging faster than the face, which is supported by a nourishing cushion of subcutaneous tissue that’s rich with blood vessels and oil glands. (Try pinching both areas to compare, and you’ll see the difference). Without that support, the neck is more susceptible to the assaults of time, sun, and irritation. “The neck trends to recover more slowly from damage and also to scar more easily,” says clinical assistant professor of dermatology at New York University Medical Center. “Every time it’s exposed to damage, it takes a harder hit than the face.”

To add insult to this predisposition to injury, too many of us ignore our necks altogether-slathering on expensive anti-aging face creams but stopping at the chin. The reason awareness is so low is, in a nutshell, force of habit. “Traditionally, products have been aimed at face care, and women have followed suit,” says associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical School. “A woman may be used to applying make up to her face every day but not think twice about her neck or decolletage.”

Depressed yet? Well, here’s the good news: For those willing to take action, saving your neck isn’t terribly complicated. Doctors unanimously agree that the most crucial treatment is preventation with sunscreen. “I wish younger women would realize it before it’s too late,” associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical School says. “Put sunscreen face on the face, neck, and chest first thing in the morning before you even get dressed.” And, she adds, ” pay attention to the sides of the neck, too, where the product also may wear off quickly.”

Once protection becomes second nature, the next step is to repair whatever damage is already visible in the mirror. While cosmetics companies offer creams specifically designed for the neck, experts say that choosing the right ingredients-in the right concentrations-is what’s most important. Although it might take a little longer to see results, ” any face product that’s not too harsh can work just as well for the neck,” Day says. Here’s how to figure out which treatments will target your particular pain in the neck.
